Negril, Jamaica: Laid-Back Beach Town with Picturesque Sunsets, Snorkeling, and Cliff Diving

Located on Jamaica’s western coast, Negril is known for its white-sand beaches, dramatic rugged cliffs, and coral reefs lying just offshore in the Caribbean. Its underwater beauty makes the town a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling at Negril Marine Park, and anglers have found the sea filled with blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The city has a front-row seat to some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, and people often climb to the top of waterfront cliffs just to watch. At Rick’s Cafe, which is listed in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, groups congregate every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon; some brave adventurers even leap off the 35-foot cliffs into the water.

Often called "the capital of casual," Negril is best defined by its laid-back vibe, from the slow and steady rhythm of the indigenous reggae music to its unofficial uniform—swimsuits and flip-flops. Running along the town is Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of powdery, white-sand coastline that earned a spot on Frommer’s Best Beaches in the Caribbean list. The town center comprises a shopping mall and a craft market where visitors can pick up locally produced goods.

Stress free vacation Lets start by saying grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable. I am not a writer and I can guarantee this will be long and rambling. I read a lot of reviews when planning our vacations so want to help others by giving my perspective. We have been to Jamacia four times but this was or first time in Negril. Our previous stays were at large resorts. I have some anxiety and stress about certain things. If i need to be somewhere I have to be early. Last minute changes are not a good thing. At the large resorts I would stress about getting to whatever restaurant or event. That was not the case here for whatever reason. My biggest stress for the week was if I was going to have the fish taco or jerk chicken for lunch. My wife noticed how relaxed I was. So lets get started. We rode with a couple that were on their eleventh trip to the resort. It was great getting tips on what to do. Check in was very easy and my wife had her first Dirty Banana before we even checked in. Our room was amazing, pay the extra to get farther away from the road. We could hear some noise at night but not bad. Time on the balcony reading was great. The food was very good. Breakfast was always good with Omelets made to order and enough variety. We ate all of our lunches at the beach. Around noon the give you a flag to stick in the sand when you want to order lunch. Onion rings were very good. Evening meals were also very good. Tip for buffet, check what is being grilled before loading up your plate. We did lotus one night and it was very good but the Chefs Showcase was even better. It took no less then eight motions to get a scoop of mashed potatoes on the plate correctly. The attention to detail was fun to watch. Last comment on food is to have the Jiggy coffee. Its addicting. The beach is gorgeous. A couple of mornings I grabbed my coffee and went down early to watch the waves and then met my wife for breakfast before returning. If you get there before nine you should be able to get a shelter. There is always enough loungers. Beach thins out in the afternoon. Make sure to be there at sunset to take pictures Warned that this would be long and rambling. Bottom line is we had a great time and for the first time in twenty years of vacations, we will be returning to the same place/ Looking forward to next Feb

Amazing Resort, 100% Recommend! We decided to return to Sunset at the Palms again this year (last week), and it was another AMAZING 5 star week. We visited the same time last year in 2025. It was so nice coming back to Sunset at the Palms, we truly felt like returning family. We’ve never returned to a resort, we were worried that it wouldn’t be as special as the same time. This return trip was just as amazing as last year, with the addition to feeling like family returning home. You would never know a hurricane hit the island looking at this resort, they did an amazing job fixing it up. They have the most amazing beach, you can pick a spot and be in complete shade, partial shade, or full sun all day. It’s rare to see a resort this nice with such a lush beach. EVERYONE was once again so incredibly nice, but we would like to call out a few people: -Tamika is such a lovely server, it really made our dinners special listening to her singing as she worked, and she was always so thoughtful and sweet. -Lavern really made us feel like we were her special guests. She always stopped to talk to us, and the towel animals she made were incredibly impressive. -Linford remembered us from his tour last year, when we passed him in the walkways he was happy to explain any plants we had questions about. When he found out we were about to leave he quickly picked a bunch of flowers for my wife, Kate, that made a beautiful bouquet. That really made our last morning at the resort special.
