Casual Resort near Seven Mile Beach and Artificial Reef
Launched in 1945, the USS Kittiwake served for nearly 50 years as a submarine support vessel for the U.S. Navy. One of the ship’s most noteworthy missions took place in 1986, when she recovered the black box from the Challenger shuttle disaster. Decommissioned in 1994, the USS Kittiwake eventually made her way to the Cayman Islands, where she was sunk into protected waters just off the coast of Grand Cayman. Today, the site serves as a popular snorkeling and scuba-diving destination for guests of the nearby Sunshine Suites Resort, located just a short walk from the island’s western shoreline.
The resort’s lemon-colored guest houses are nestled among towering thatch palms, bright red ixora bushes, and other tropical flora. You might even see Grand Cayman Amazon parrots perched atop leafy coconut palms or running errands among the lush landscape. Visit the front desk to rent bicycles, or pick up complimentary beach chairs and towels to enjoy the aquamarine waters of nearby Seven Mile Beach, named one of the best beaches in the Caribbean by Frommer’s.
The Sunshine Grill, rated the top restaurant in the Cayman Islands by TripAdvisor, sits next to the resort’s freshwater pool. It serves award-winning local cuisine—the mahi-mahi tacos have earned accolades at the Taste of Cayman—and signature cocktails. After a dinner of fresh ground-beef burgers or grilled-grouper sandwiches, retire to plush suites outfitted with separate living and bedroom areas and fully stocked kitchens. The spacious rooms celebrate the island’s natural beauty with brightly colored furnishings and views overlooking the garden, pool, or courtyard.
Grand Cayman: Family-Friendly Destination Abounding with Sea Turtles, Stingrays, and Blue Iguanas
Earlier this year, the New York Times recommended Grand Cayman—the largest of the three Cayman Islands—as 1 of 10 winter getaways for families. The Times praises the island for its easy accessibility and kid-friendly activities, such as the Cayman Turtle Farm, which hatches and releases green sea turtles, and Stingray City, where visitors can touch, feed, and swim among dozens of Atlantic southern stingrays. Adult-centric pursuits include the North Sound, Blue Tip, and Britannia golf courses, located just minutes from Sunshine Suites Resort.
Further inland, you can find some of Grand Cayman’s most elusive residents—blue iguanas. Native only to Grand Cayman, the lizards were driven to the brink of extinction through habitat destruction and the introduction of cats and dogs to the island. However, recent conservation efforts by the Blue Iguana Recovery Program have begun to restore their population. Today, nearly 300 blue iguanas can be viewed in protected areas such as the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and Salina Reserve.
