Get a feel for what it was like to sail on Lake Michigan aboard an 19th-century windjammer with this cruise aboard the Tall Ship Manitou. On the first night, you’ll check in between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and attend a wine-and-cheese reception with other guests. You’ll be free to go into Traverse City for dinner and then return to the boat for the night. The ship may have an old-fashioned aesthetic—guest rooms are outfitted with wooden bunks—but comfy linens and other amenities provide modern-day comforts. You’ll set sail on the morning of Day 2, and from here on out all meals and entertainment are included. This getaway lets you choose from four different themed cruises, which we have outlined below.
Astronomy cruise: A professional astronomer, Mark Nussbaum, helps you identify constellations and planets as you study the night sky.
Photography cruise: Bring your camera and photography gear along on this cruise, during which a pro photographer offers tips and guidance to help you snap the best pics of the lake and surrounding scenery.
Wine-tasting cruise: Wines from around the world complement gourmet meals on this cruise. A wine connoisseur offers guests tips on pairing and tasting.
Fall foliage cruise: Admire the bright orange, yellow, and red hues of the trees that surround the Great Lakes during this scenic autumn jaunt.
