Chalets on Terry Peak in the Northern Black Hills

The summit of Terry Peak is one of the nation’s highest points east of the Rockies, with more snow than anywhere else in the region, attracting droves of skiers each winter. But in the spring, the snow melts to reveal biking, hiking, and horseback-riding trails that wind across the 7,000-foot-high mountain. The Terry Peak Chalets are located just steps from the Stewart lift, providing easy access to the scenic trails.

Terry Peak Chalets owner Chris Kenzy describes the property’s four chalets as “Colorado contemporary.” They’re post-and-beam homes lined with wrought-iron light fixtures and stone fireplaces. Some bathrooms feature farm hydrant sinks and wood paneling. There’s a rustic sensibility to the chalets, yet you can bask in the secluded outdoor hot tub or lounge on plush sofas in front of flat-screen TVs.

The chalets have about 3,100 square feet of space and can accommodate up to 14 people, making them great for family getaways or city-council lock-ins. You can prepare dinner in the spacious kitchen, barbecue on the deck, or drive 9 miles east to dine in historic Deadwood.

Deadwood, South Dakota: Historic Town Surrounded by Mountains and National Parks

Deadwood is located on the northern tip of Black Hills National Forest. On Main Street, antique lamps light cobblestone streets and narrow brick storefronts. It’s easy to imagine now-mythic American outlaws, such as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, strutting through the doors of dim saloons. That authentic feel is due in part to a vast preservation project that restored the town to its boomtown glory; the restoration helped the mountain town to earn a place on _Forbes_’s 2010 list of America’s prettiest towns.

Trek beyond the town to get an idea of the Old-West lifestyle with horseback tours that depart from Deadwood and wind through canyons, past centuries-old mining remnants. An easy trail for all ages is the 100-mile George S. Mickelson Trail, which runs through 100 converted railroad bridges and hard-rock tunnels—perfect for horseback riding and biking.

You don’t have to travel far to find gorgeous natural landmarks, either. Herds of wild buffalo roam near the roads en route to Jewel Cave National Monument, where 160 miles of mazelike tunnels are lined with shimmering crystals. Mount Rushmore lies about a one-hour drive from Deadwood as well. The region is also home to five other parks, including 71,000-acre Custer State Park and Devils Tower National Monument, which only 1% of the park’s annual visitors dare to climb.
