Historical Civil War–Era Hotel on Georgetown's Circle
In 1836, a two-story brick hotel was erected on Georgetown’s Circle. When the Civil War broke out a few decades later, Union supporters co-opted the hotel as their unofficial clubhouse. In the years that followed, the building served as a county courthouse, a post office, and a bank before it was fully restored and reopened in 2008 as The Brick Hotel On The Circle. Today, the storied hotel is a convenient home base for exploring Georgetown’s historic buildings and antique stores.
Each of the hotel’s guest rooms is furnished with antiques such as period bedsteads and old-fashioned clocks. Daisy stained-glass wall art decorates the Lazy Daisy room, and the Mayor's Manor—a tongue-in-cheek nod to the innkeeper's short stint as Georgetown's mayor—incorporates a pineapple motif as a symbol of hospitality. A few rooms offer small fireplaces and views overlooking the circle.
After settling in, head downstairs to The Brick Hotel's in-house tavern and restaurant—open Tuesday through Saturday—to use your dining credit toward seared scallops or Maryland crab cakes with a pint of cold ale. On Thursdays, the hotel hosts an afternoon tea where you can nibble on scones, cream puffs, and an assortment of sandwich samples ($18–$24/person; reservations required).
Georgetown, Delaware: Charming Colonial-Era Town
Georgetown is located in southern Delaware, right across Delaware Bay from New Jersey. In 1791, the city was laid out in a circle 1 mile in diameter, starting with the town square. Today, you’ll find lots of historical buildings along the square—the stately white tower of the Sussex County Courthouse stands just opposite The Brick Hotel on the Circle. There are several other notable buildings within a short walk of the hotel, including St. Paul's Episcopal Church—built in 1794, it’s the oldest church in the city.
