Rustic Cabins and Winding ATV Trails in Uinta Mountains

Husband-and-wife co-owners Roger and Heidi Eggett built The Cabins at Bear River Lodge as a place where "family and friends can create memories." Roger has created plenty of his own memories on the hundreds of miles of groomed ATV trails surrounding the cabins. Wilderness is king at Bear River Lodge, which lies within the 2.1-million-acre Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, about two hours east of Salt Lake City.

A fleet of ATVs are always on hand, gassed up and ready to zip through meadows or rev their engines to the tune of Beethoven’s Ninth. When there‘s still snow on the ground, you can sled down the tubing hill and glide on the 30-mile Lily Lake cross-country-ski trail. Come summer, Bear River Lodge’s two 20-person hot tubs and heated outdoor swimming pool open for the season. You can also wet a line in a pair of ponds stocked with rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout.

Each freestanding log cabin features a jetted tub and a spacious living room with leather couches and a flat-screen TV. Both the one- and two-bedroom cabins have walkout patios or balconies that overlook the rushing Bear River. Although each cabin is equipped with a full kitchen, the onsite Bear's Grill will relieve you of cooking duties with full menus at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The attached convenience store is stocked with groceries, beverages, and fishing supplies.

Summit County, Utah: Multiuse Trails in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest

The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is a recreational playground with hundreds of miles of ATV, snowmobile, mountain-bike, and cross-country-ski trails. If you want to venture out on foot, there are an abundance of nonmotorized trails, open only to hikers, horses, and determined kayakers.

It's a bit of a hike at 65 miles away, but the former mining boomtown of Park City offers a trip-worthy dose of culture. Stroll the length of historical Main Street, which is lined with boutiques and art galleries. The Egyptian Theatre is a must-see on Main Street. Built in 1926, the iconic theater fills with movie stars during the Sundance Film Festival and hosts touring bands and musicals throughout most of the year.
