Hotel in Restored Mill on Banks of Sugar River
During the industrial revolution, Claremont was a prosperous New England mill town with numerous factories springing up along the banks of the Sugar River. When the factories closed in the 20th century, many of the buildings fell into disrepair. In 2008, Alex Ray and Rusty McLear purchased a pair of former textile mills and painstakingly restored them, transforming the tumbledown brick buildings into The Common Man Inn, an award-winning hotel in New Hampshire’s Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee region.
The hotel’s guest rooms feature exposed-brick walls, comfy feather beds, and white shutters—some of which open onto views of the water. There are also spacious, individually decorated signature suites with amenities such as fireplaces and jetted tubs.
Downstairs in the lively Common Man restaurant, you can use an included $20 dining credit toward local crab cakes, baked mac ‘n’ cheese, or anything else on the menu. In the morning, start the day right with a complimentary continental breakfast.
