Hotel at a Glance: The Groveland Hotel

The Groveland Hotel’s roots in its California home are deep; so deep, in fact, that it predates the state itself. When construction began on the building that would be The Groveland in 1848, California was still officially a part of Mexico. Today, the hotel has been outfitted with modern amenities—including complimentary WiFi—but it still maintains its old-timey feel. The hotel’s wrap-around hacienda balcony harkens back to another era, while the European antique furniture helps you channel the early settlers.

  • Coffee in bed: Use the in-room grinders and coffee makers to brew up a fresh pot every morning.
  • Start the day right with a trip to the hotel’s continental breakfast.
  • Dessert for two: Every option includes one bottle of wine and a dessert, perfect for a romantic evening for two.
  • A splash of adventure: The nearby Tuolumne River is an ideal place for a whitewater rafting expedition.
  • Take a day-trip to hike Half Dome, one of Yosemite’s most famous trails; the trail is about 50 miles away.

Groveland, California: Historic Town near Yosemite National Park and Ski Areas

After the gold rush subsided, Groveland became a boomtown once more—between 1915 and 1935—as the base of operations for the Hetch Hetchy water project, a massive plan to bring fresh water to San Francisco. These days, natural resources remain the area’s biggest draw. Groveland borders nearly 1 million acres of woodlands and miles of rivers comprising Stanislaus National Forest.

The small town has remained a popular stop on the route to Yosemite National Park, which lies about a 30-minute drive east. A year-round destination, the park has seasonal activities ranging from hiking and fishing in the summer to skiing in the winter. “About the only thing you can’t do in Yosemite is surf,” Frommer’s says, citing the rock climbing here as some of the world’s best thanks to the sustained cracks in the canyons. Winter in Yosemite is a tranquil period as traffic decreases, allowing visitors to take in the snowy mountainscapes at their own paces.
