Top Reasons to Visit The Historic Redstone Inn

  • It’s surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, hidden in a valley shaded by massive red cliffs. The views from the hotel shouldn’t to be missed.
  • Located in the wilderness about 200 miles west of Denver, the inn has a secluded feel. The internet and cell service isn’t strong, meaning you can disconnect from the call of everyday life.
  • Like the rest of the small town of Redstone, the inn was built in traditional Swiss chalet-style in the late 1800’s and has a historical feel.
  • In the summertime, you can go fly-fishing on the nearby Crystal River or hike up East Creek.
  • Each of the inn’s rooms have TVs. If you’re traveling with kids, try the family suite room, which comfortably sleeps up to five.
  • On weekends, you can enjoy a full breakfast in the on-site Grill. Lunch and dinner are served throughout the week.
  • Visitors can also enjoy shopping, horse-drawn carriage rides, and hot springs.

Redstone, Colorado: Historic Swiss-Chalet Style Town Close to “America’s Most Fun City”

The small town of Redstone is out in the wilderness, about 200 miles west of Denver. The entire town looks like was relocated from the Swiss Alps—in fact, the buildings are modeled after European mountain chalets. Entrepreneur John Cleveland Osgood built the town to house the employees of his coal mining operation. In his tudor-style Redstone Castle, Osgood hosted guests such as John D. Rockefeller, J. Pierpont Morgan and Teddy Roosevelt. More recently, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, and Michael Cane visited it while they filmed The Prestige. You can explore the estate on one of their public tours.

Since it’s surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Redstone has no shortage of outdoor activities. In winter, you can make the short drive to Vail, which has world-class skiing and fine dining. In summer, Crystal River is a popular spot for fly-fishing—the whitefish and rainbow trout here are especially hungry and feisty. The high alpine meadows, wildflowers, and cascading creeks also set the scene for fantastic hikes (many of the hikes are challenging; if you go, be sure to bring extra water).

The town is about 30 miles south of Glenwood Springs, which Rand McNally and USA Today named the Most Fun Town in America in 2011. Golfing, hiking, and whitewater rafting are all within easy reach here. Another must-see: the Glenwood Hot Springs pool. More than 3 million gallons of hot water flow through the pool every day, making it the world’s largest swimming pool of its kind. The same waters run through the Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves, creating a mineral-enriched steam in the humid subterranean chambers that’s believed to have healing powers.
