Before it was converted into a B & B in 1967, the property now known as The Inn at Sawmill Farm served for more than 170 years as, well, a sawmill and then a farm. During the estate's transformation into an inn, the new owners retained as much of the original buildings as possible. The dairy barn’s hand-hewn posts and boards were repurposed in the new construction, and a portion of the barn's old-fashioned red-and-white exterior became part of an interior hallway. The hayloft is now a library and game room, and sheep stalls were converted into cozy bedrooms. Antiques and quilts complement the down-home flavor of the place, where 21 guest rooms are divvied up among several cottages dotting the 20-acre property.
Just beyond the main building, you'll find the The Farm House and the The Cider House. Inside, each bedroom is individually decorated and equipped with a wood-burning fireplace and private bathroom. The Cider House 1 Room is painted a sunny yellow and features a small deck overlooking the outdoor pool. Fishing ponds, hiking trails, and tennis courts are all located nearby.
The inn's onsite restaurant, Nonna’s, serves traditional Italian dishes Wednesday–Sunday. The menu lists a variety of pastas as well as Nonna’s signature meatballs, which come glazed in a plum-tomato ragu. Cannoli filled with orange-scented ricotta make for a satisfying finish. Every other Wednesday during the summer, the restaurant presents four-course meals enhanced by wine and served alfresco amid tiki torches and floating candles.
Those who opt for the adventure package can choose between a 40-minute horseback ride for two or a two-hour canoe trip for two on Lake Harriman Reservoir. While paddling through the water, keep an eye out for the bald eagles and loons that call the lake home.
West Dover is a small town in Vermont's Mount Snow Valley, a rural area that's becoming increasingly popular with out-of-towners, as evidenced by West Dover's more than 30 B & Bs. Local attractions include abundant farm-to-table dining and a slew of outdoor activities at Mt. Snow, which stays open year-round. Skiers and snowboarders take to the slopes in winter, and summer brings hikers and mountains bikers eager to take on more than 20 miles of trails. The mountain also has an 18-hole golf course and chairlift rides offering views of southern Vermont and New York state.
