Historic Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Downtown Keene

For more than 100 years, the Goodnow Department Store was a one-stop shop for household goods and clothing on Main Street in downtown Keene, New Hampshire. The historic brick building, built in 1891, closed in 1995, but after a complete restoration and overhaul in 2001, reopened its doors as The Lane Hotel. Inside the boutique hotel, guests can sit next to the posh lobby fireplace and sip drinks while looking out over Keene's Central Square.

Each king or queen room has its own personality, but all rooms feature exposed-brick walls and tony furnishings, such as tall cherry-wood headboards and plush tapestried chairs where you can settle in with your included bottle of wine. In the morning, head downstairs for a complimentary coffee-and-pastry breakfast.

Adjacent to The Lane Hotel is the award-winning Fireworks restaurant, which Vermont Life magazine calls a "top Vermont foodie destination." Chef Matthew Blau serves creative Italian food, such as crisp, fried risotto cake and potato-and-ricotta gnocchi in a warm-and-intimate setting.

Keene, New Hampshire: Pretty Streets and Pumpkin Fests Close to Hiking and Ski Trails

The community of Keene, called "one of the prettiest in New England" by former Yale president Timothy Dwight, is located at the southeastern border of New Hampshire, close to Vermont's state line. Keene feels like a quintessential New England town; solid brick buildings and old trees line Main Street, and just outside of The Lane Hotel, there are more than 30 locally owned shops and restaurants to walk to. Take a 10-minute stroll over to the Colonial Theatre, where you can take in a live performance of A Chorus Line or Bill Cosby's standup routine. On October 20, you can participate in the famous Keene Pumpkin Festival, an annual gathering televised on HGTV's Property Brothers. During the fest, participants light thousands of carved pumpkins all at once in an attempt to set a world record.

Keene is set in the center of the Monadnock Mountain region, where there are plenty of ways to explore the great outdoors. Granite Gorge Ski Area is just 5 miles from the hotel, and Rhododendron State Park is a 15-minute drive away. Named for its 16-acre rhododendron grove that blooms through the end of fall, the massive park features miles of hiking and biking trails.
