Bald Head Island, North Carolina: Historic Lighthouse and Secluded Beaches on Car-Free Island
You can’t hail a cab on Bald Head Island and there’s nowhere to park your car. In fact, most vehicles are banned in this village, keeping it pleasantly devoid of honking horns and screeching tires. The only way to get here is by ferry, and once on the island, most folks get around by golf cart or bicycle, or on foot. It’s a short walk from the ferry landing to the famous Old Baldy Lighthouse, which has been standing on the same spot for nearly 200 years. Climb the 108 steps to the top for panoramic views.
During warmer months, you can stroll along the island’s beaches or go canoeing, kayaking, and sailing on the Cape Fear River. Book a fishing charter to reel in mackerel, flounder, and non-indigenous Swedish Fish. Waterfowl such as ibises and great blue herons make the area a prime spot for birdwatching. Be sure to stop at the Maritime Market to shop for fresh seafood and local produce.
