19th-Century Inn Surrounded by Snowy Forests and Mountains

Situated in the midst of the White Mountain National Forest, The Notchland Inn is surrounded by untarnished views of mountains, forests, and the Saco River. Such seclusion makes the inn a nice place to spot local wildlife; moose, fox, owls, and ermine are all common visitors to the landscaped grounds here. At the very least, you’re guaranteed to see the inn’s resident canines, Crawford and Felonie, during your stay—the pups love the winter season and like to greet guests as they come in the door.

The 19th-century mansion has served as an inn since the 1920s, and current innkeepers Ed Butler and Les Schoof maintain the longstanding tradition of hospitality. Each morning, they offer a housemade breakfast in the dining room with a choice of pancakes, french toast, or eggs served scrambled, fried, or hard-boiled if you want to juggle them. You can also reserve a spot for the inn’s five-course dinner (served Wednesday-Sunday), which is dished up five nights a week (extra fees). The house-cooked meal—which includes a soup, appetizer, entree, salad, dessert, and selection of wines, beers, and spirits—often lasts well into the night.

In the evenings, you can retire to a deluxe room, which is appointed with one king or queen bed, a seating area, and a wood-burning fireplace. There are six queen rooms and two king rooms available so availability is limited. The decor and layout varies in each room, but all have large windows that look out onto the surrounding mountains.

Hart’s Location, New Hampshire: Scenic Town near Skiing in the White Mountains

The northern New Hampshire town of Hart’s Location might be best known as one of only two locations in the country that cast the first votes of the presidential election—polls here open shortly after midnight on Election Day. But to visitors, the town’s most remarkable asset is its scenery. Hart’s Location is surrounded on all sides by the White Mountain National Forest, an expansive tract of land set with towering mountain peaks, miles of snowshoeing trails, and scenic drives. Take a spin on the 100-mile-long White Mountain Trail, which passes directly through the town, and you’ll wend past sweeping mountain vistas and historical towns with white-steeple churches and country cottages.

Some of the region’s most popular ski resorts are within a 15-minute drive of Hart’s Location, including Bretton Woods and Attitash Mountain Resort. The latter is comprised of 67 groomed trails and more than 60 acres of tree skiing across two mountains. Crawford Notch State Park is worth a visit, too. It has quite a few snowshoeing trails that are even great for beginners. The park is open year-round; you can find it about 6 miles north of The Notchland Inn.
