Inn at a Glance: The Notchland Inn
Situated in the midst of the White Mountain National Forest, The Notchland Inn is surrounded by untarnished views of mountains, forests, and the Saco River. The 19th-century mansion has served as an inn since the 1920s, and current innkeepers Ed Butler and Les Schoof maintain the longstanding tradition of hospitality. Each morning, they offer a housemade breakfast in the dining room with a choice of pancakes, french toast, or eggs served every which-way. In the evenings, you can retire to your room; while the decor and layout varies, each room has a fireplace and large windows that look out onto the surrounding mountains.
- Fine dining: Reserve a spot at one of the inn’s five-course dinners, which includes a soup, appetizer, entree, salad, dessert, and selection of wines, beers, and spirits. (Served Wednesday–Sunday, extra fees apply.)
- Hit the slopes at Attitash Mountain Resort, a 15-minute drive away.
- Welcome spring in the inn’s luscious gardens, which starts to blossom as soon as the snow melts.
- Canine therapy: The Notchland’s two resident dogs, Gypsy and Roxie, love to greet and play with guests.
Hart’s Location, New Hampshire: Scenic Town Surrounded by the White Mountains
The northern New Hampshire town of Hart’s Location might be best known as one of only two locations in the country that cast the first votes of the presidential election—polls here open shortly after midnight on Election Day. But to visitors, the town’s most remarkable asset is its scenery. Hart’s Location is surrounded on all sides by the White Mountain National Forest, an expansive tract of land set with towering mountain peaks, miles of snowshoeing trails, and scenic drives. Take a spin on the 100-mile-long White Mountain Trail, which passes directly through the town, and you’ll wend past sweeping mountain vistas and historical towns with white-steeple churches and country cottages.
