La Jolla, California: Upscale Coastal Community Conveniently Close to San Diego Attractions
La Jolla sits on the northern outskirts of San Diego, on a stretch of hilly coastal terrain marked by sprawling mansions and dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Boutiques, galleries, and upscale restaurants populate the Village, La Jolla’s downtown business district, but Mother Nature takes center stage throughout most of the area.
Many people hop in kayaks to see the 6,000 acres of rocky reefs at the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park. You can explore sea caves and get a glimpse of marine life, including sea lions and orange garibaldi. The park’s La Jolla Cove draws in divers and snorkelers, who plunge into the calm, clear waters to get up close to the living coral. After a dive, it's nice to kick back and soak in the sun on the white-sand beachfront.
