Hiking, Boating, and Wine Tasting in New Zealand’s Lush Landscapes

New Zealand is particularly stunning in the summertime, when its hills become lush and green and colorful sailboats dot its deep-blue lakes. On this 11-day, 8-night trip to New Zealand, you’ll visit two cities nestled in this picturesque setting: Auckland in the north and Queenstown in the south. The trip also includes roundtrip airfare from LAX, hotel accommodations in both cities, and a flight from Auckland to Queenstown. Click here for a full itinerary.

Days 1–2: Since you cross the International Date Line en route from Los Angeles to Sydney, your first two days will be spent in transit on Qantas Airways. Settle into ergonomic seats with adjustable headrest wings, built-in lumbar support, and space to enjoy in-flight meals and entertainment.

Day 3: Your flight touches down in Sydney in the morning; you’ll have to change planes to reach the day’s final destination: Auckland. Once you arrive, you’ll travel to Auckland City Hotel in the city’s business and entertainment district.

Days 4–6: The next three days are yours to explore Auckland on your own. The city is New Zealand’s largest, a vibrant metropolis with plenty of shopping, fine dining, and boating opportunities—it has more boats per capita than anywhere else in the world, earning it the nickname City of Sails. The harbor is just a 15-minute walk from the hotel. You can also walk to Queen Street shopping and Sky Tower, a sightseeing tower with glass-fronted elevators that lift you 1,076 feet (328 meters) in the air.

Hop on a passenger ferry for a day trip to Waiheke Island, known for its vineyards and art scene. Visit The Wine Bar at Cable Bay Vineyards to taste classic New Zealand wines with small plates of cured meats, French cheeses, and freshly baked bread.

Day 7: In the morning, head to the Auckland airport for your flight to Queenstown. Upon arrival, you’ll make your own way to the Mercure Queenstown Resort, which overlooks Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains.

Days 8–10: Explore Queenstown at your leisure over the next three days. Nestled beside Lake Wakatipu in southern New Zealand, the city is rife with natural beauty and outdoor pursuits. Take a short walk to the lake to swim, jet ski, or boat in its turquoise waters. Or pull on comfortable shoes and follow one of the many hiking and biking trails that start in the city center.

Day 11: On the final day, you’ll head back to the Queenstown airport and catch a flight back to Los Angeles via Sydney.
