La Fortuna
La Fortuna’s centerpiece is Arenal Volcano—a cone-shaped behemoth that erupted in 1968 and simmered for many decades. (The volcano has been relatively quiet for the last few years.) You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the volcano from Hotel Kokoro, where you’ll spend the first three nights of your trip. This eco-friendly lodge features its own private mineral hot springs and a restaurant that sources its ingredients locally.
- Must-see attraction: Arenal Volcano National Park consists of nearly 30,000 acres of misty cloud forests, petrified lava fields, and the tranquil Lake Arenal. Its centerpiece is the conical, 5,000-foot Arenal Volcano.
- Where to relax: Tabacon Hot Springs, where exotic orchids surround secluded caves and you can lounge in pools of hot springs fed by a waterfall.
Guanacaste
The province of Guanacaste takes its name from the Guanacaste tree, an umbrella-shaped species also known as the earpod tree. These trees blanket the slopes of the Guanacaste and Tilaran Mountains, helping shelter the coastline from rainstorms and keeping the beaches warm and dry. You’ll be able to hit the beach in style at the 4-star, adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo Resort. The beach is a quick walk downhill, and your three all-inclusive days include unlimited food, drink, and lounging.
- Activities:Kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming in the warm gulf waters
- 4 restaurants, 3 bars, and a snack bar mean you’ll be able to choose from Italian, Asian, Tex Mex, and international fare, as well as sip fruity cocktails, whenever you like.
- Must-see attraction: Visit Palo Verde and Tamarindo, both known for their surfing.
San José
Your final stop is 4-star Barceló San José Palacio in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica. This upscale modern hotel is just three miles from San Jose’s urban center, where you’ll find busy markets, cafés, and museums. It will be simple to drive into town with your rental to explore San Jose’s vibrant nightlife and entertainment districts—don’t miss a chance to go dancing at a salsa or merengue club.
- Must-see attraction: The Jade Museum boasts thousands of ancient jade jewelry pieces, carved figures, and ceramic artifacts dating back as far as 500 BC.
- Take a walking tour in Barrio Amón, one of San José’s oldest neighborhoods, to soak up the colonial architecture and sample street food such as tamales and pupusas (stuffed flatbread).
