Three-City Costa Rica Vacation
Visit the beach, jungle, and capital city of Costa Rica on this 8-day vacation from Travel by Jen. Each option includes:
- Round-trip airfare from Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), New York City, San Francisco (SFO), Washington DC, or Chicago to San Jose (SJO) airport
- 3-night stay at Puerto Viejo La Costa de Papito in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
- 3-night stay at Montana de Fuego Resort & Spa or similar in La Fortuna, which features onsite hot springs
- 1- night stay at Best Western Irazu Hotel & Casino in San Jose
- Daily breakfast is included
- 8 day manual economy car rental (minimum age required)
- Choice of one self-drive tour: Zip Line, Arenal Horseback Riding or Arenal River Tubing tour (you will make your selection at time of redemption)
Days 1–3: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
driving time: 4 hours
Surfers were the first to descend on Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, but they were soon followed by other sun-loving visitors. Today, the beachfront town in southeastern Costa Rica is a popular spot to go snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and partying into the wee hours at a growing number of bars. Of course, experienced surfers can still ride gnarly waves at Salsa Brava and Playa Cocles.
- Hit the beach: Spend some time at Playa Cocles (awarded a Blue Flag for cleanliness) where you can sunbathe and swim on the calmer south end.
- Drive down the coast to visit the Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge in nearby Manzanillo. The snorkeling conditions are especially clear here—look out for tropical fish, venus sea fans, and the occasional manatee.
- Where you’ll stay: La Costa de Papito’s rustic bungalows in the jungle. Though there is no air conditioning, guests will enjoy sleeping to the sound of the ocean breeze.
Days 4–6: La Fortuna
driving time: 5 hours
La Fortuna’s centerpiece is Arenal Volcano—a cone-shaped behemoth that erupted in 1968 and has been simmering ever since. In fact, the town got its name because it was spared from destruction during that last violent eruption. Today, you can get up-close views of the volcano and hike through fields of petrified lava at the sprawling Arenal National Park. The area’s intense geothermal activity also produces therapeutic natural hot springs.
- Take a boat tour of nearby Lake Arenal for some of the best views of the volcano. Other optional tours include zipline, horseback riding, and tubing.
- Go birdwatching in Arenal National Park to spot parrots, orioles, and brown magpies.
- Where you’ll stay: Montana de Fuego Resort & Spa, which offers airy rooms with balconies overlooking a private nature reserve and Arenal Volcano
Day 7: San Jose
driving time: 2 hours
The country’s capital city is often overlooked in favor of Costa Rica’s golden beaches and jungle adventures, but it’s worth a visit for its historic neighborhoods and bustling open-air markets. Barrio Amón, one of San José’s oldest neighborhoods, is a particularly nice place to take a stroll and sample street foods, such as tamales and stuffed flatbreads called pupusas.
- Soak up Spanish colonial architecture on a stroll through downtown San Jose.
- Visit the Mercado Central: Vendors sell fried plantains, sugarcane brandy, and other goods at stands known as sodas. You can also stock up on souvenirs, from handcrafted leather and jewelry to T-shirts and musical instruments.
- Where you’ll stay: Best Western Irazu Hotel & Casino, a modern hotel that’s just a short drive from the airport
