La Fortuna
La Fortuna’s centerpiece is Arenal Volcano—a cone-shaped behemoth that erupted in 1968 and has been simmering ever since. In fact, the town got its name because it was spared from destruction during that last violent eruption. Today, you can get up-close views of the volcano and hike through fields of petrified lava at the sprawling Arenal National Park. The area’s intense geothermal activity also produces therapeutic natural hot springs.

If you get an itch for adventure, you might try your hand at sport fishing or surfing.
