Ideas for Your Vacation
La Fortuna’s centerpiece is Arenal Volcano—a cone-shaped behemoth that erupted in 1968 and has been simmering ever since. In fact, the town got its name because it was spared from destruction during that last violent eruption. Today, you can get up-close views of the volcano and hike through fields of petrified lava at the sprawling Arenal National Park.
Situated on the Pacific coast of the quiet northern province of Guanacaste, Playa Flamingo offers a quiet jumping-off point for the exploration of some of the nation’s most untamed beaches and coastlands. The white sands that overlook Brasilito Bay provide ample opportunities for adventure, including sport-fishing excursions, snorkeling trips, or whale-watching trips.
- Arenal Volcano National Park consists of nearly 30,000 acres of misty cloud forests, petrified lava fields, and the tranquil Lake Arenal. Its centerpiece: the conical, 5,000-foot Arenal Volcano.
- Volcanic vents heat the many hot springs around Arenal to temperatures of up to 100 degrees. Some hot springs have been equipped with swim-up bars and water slides.
- Explore the water: The Guanacaste area is known for its world-class sportfishing, scuba diving, and snorkeling.
- Eat like a local: Order a side of gallo pinto, or traditional rice and beans, named for its speckled appearance (gallo pinto is Spanish for “spotted rooster”)
