Banff, Alberta: World-Famous National Park in the Heart of the Canadian Rockies

One of the most popular resort towns in all of Canada, Banff is located on the western edge of Alberta inside Banff National Park. It encompasses 2,564 square miles of snow-capped mountains, coniferous forests, and glacial lakes that are a shocking shade of blue; US News & World Report called Banff one of the best national parks in the world. For some of the best views of the scenery, head to the top of Sulphur Mountain. The Banff Gondola will whisk you to the summit in eight minutes, or you can hike the Sulphur Mountain Trail, a challenging route that ascends nearly half a mile through groves of alpine larch. The trail, along with many others, begins at Banff Upper Hot Springs, an outdoor pool with 100-degrees Fahrenheit spring water.

The park is a recreational playground all year long with miles of hiking, biking, and skiing trails. During the winter, it’s possible to drive a dogsled across frozen lakes or snowshoe through the hills. Some people come to just check out the wildlife—you’re almost certain to spot elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. To learn more about the native species, take a guided evening safari with Discover Banff Tours.

Downtown Banff is a bustling commercial center filled with independent shops. A slew of bars and restaurants serve bison, venison, and elk. The sparkling Bow River winds through town. Take a stroll along the Bow River Falls trail and you’ll get up-close views of the cascading waters.
