Iberostar Dominicana can feel more like a small city than a resort. Set on the sandy shores of Playa Bavaro, the all-inclusive property has its own shopping area with a supermarket and pharmacy; a casino with table games and slots; and an 18-hole golf course that guests can use for an additional fee. There are also two swimming pools and three lighted tennis courts onsite.
Down at the beach, bright yellow lounge chairs are arranged under the shade of thatched palapas. Guests can use the resort’s kayaks, snorkeling gear, and dolphin-drawn chariots for free, or book a diving trip from its PADI-certified scuba center for an additional charge.
Of the nine restaurants onsite, there’s everything from Mexican food and juicy steaks to sushi. Renovated in 2010, La Cana serves a Dominican-inspired buffet with plenty of fresh seafood. In between meals, you can hit up Iberostar Dominicana’s beach bars for tropical cocktails, or visit the sports bar, which serves drinks until 3 a.m. At the end of the day, retire to the balcony of your junior suite for a nightcap from the mini bar.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Miles of White-Sand Beaches
When Christopher Columbus landed on the Dominican Republic more than five centuries ago, he described it as “a beautiful island paradise.” Punta Cana, located on the island’s easternmost tip, lays legitimate claim to that description. The coast stretches for more than 20 miles and is dotted with coconut palms, chaise lounges, and laid-back bars. Glitzy resorts feature prominently along the shoreline, but Playa El Cortecito, a short drive up the coast, harks back to earlier times. Brightly colored, thatched-roof shacks line the beach, and local fishermen bring their boats to shore each afternoon with the day’s catch.
