Hotel at Glance: Villa Caletas

Perched 1,500 feet above the Pacific Ocean, the 4-star Villa Caletas overlooks one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world—a lush Costa Rican rainforest. Almost everywhere you turn there’s a panoramic view of crystal-blue waters and tropical foliage. The views are among the many reasons Condé Nast Traveler readers named Villa Caletas one of the top five hotels in Central America in 2009, 2011, and 2012. For more space, opt for a junior suite superior, which also has a private jetted tub that provides a perfect place to unwind under the clear night sky.

  • Where you’ll stay: a junior suite or junior suite superior with a private terrace overlooking the ocean, mountains, or gardens
  • See endless ocean views from the infinity pool, which is about a quarter mile over the sea.
  • A private beach is about a mile away; you can reach it via a free shuttle or a well-marked rainforest trail.
  • The rainforest trail is sprinkled with waterfalls and plunge pools. You might see white-faced monkeys and toucans along the way.
  • Watch the sun set over the Gulf of Nicoya from a cove or sun bed on the beach.
  • Two fine-dining spots at the hotel include The Anfiteatro Bar & Restaurant and Mirador Restaurant, which serves upscale international cuisine.
  • Recent praise: named one of Costa Rica’s top 25 hotels in TripAdvisor’s 2017 and 2018 Travelers’ Choice awards

Puntarenas, Costa Rica: Scarlet Macaws and Surfing in Popular Ecotourism Getaway

Puntarenas is Costa Rica’s largest province, extending hundreds of miles along the Pacific coast from the Panama border up to the Gulf of Nicoya. In Puntarenas, you’re never far from beaches, national parks, and nature reserves, making the area popular for ecotourism. The beachside town of Jacó attracts surfers from all over the globe with consistently big waves and good breaks. About 20 miles north, Carara National Park is home to crocodiles, two-toed sloths, and hundreds of scarlet macaws—a rare sight in most parts of the country.

The property was absolutely beautiful! We opted for the junior suite with the private hot tub on our patio which was a fun and well-worth-it perk. The surroundings were beautiful and the view breathtaking. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. We stayed in November (still a little rainy, but the mornings/afternoons were clear until about 2 or 3pm).

This is hands down the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. We had a private villa that overlooked a canopy and the ocean. Macaws would come in the morning and you could hear all sorts of wildlife around you. The restaurant was great and they had a breathtaking infinity pool. I wish I had known how magical this place was before planning or I would have had some "stay in" days and hiked the property/beach around us.
