Tour Itinerary at a Glance

Munich & Salzburg Getaway

Day 1: Depart the US for Munich, Germany

Fly overnight from the United States to Munich, the capital of Bavaria and gateway to alpine culture, centuries-old architecture, and hearty German cuisine. Get some rest onboard in preparation for your European adventure.

Day 2: Arrive in Munich & Travel to Salzburg

Arrive in Munich and proceed to the central train station for your journey to Salzburg, Austria—a scenic ride of about 1.5 to 2 hours through the Bavarian countryside. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take time to unwind. If time allows, enjoy a gentle stroll through Salzburg’s Old Town (Altstadt), a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its baroque architecture and charming alleyways. Consider dinner at a local Austrian tavern offering schnitzel, goulash, or apple strudel.

Day 3: Day at Leisure in Salzburg

Spend the day discovering Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. Start at the majestic Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched above the city with panoramic views. Then explore Mozart’s Birthplace, and stroll along Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s famous shopping street. In the afternoon, relax in the beautifully manicured Mirabell Gardens, and if interested, attend an evening classical concert or dinner show in one of the city’s historic venues.

Day 4: Explore More of Salzburg

Venture beyond the city center with a visit to Hellbrunn Palace and its whimsical trick fountains, or take a Sound of Music tour to see iconic film locations in the Austrian countryside. Alternatively, opt for a scenic day trip to Hallstatt, a picture-perfect lakeside village nestled in the Alps. Return to Salzburg for a final evening in this romantic and culturally rich city.

Day 5: Travel from Salzburg to Munich

Board a morning or midday train back to Munich, arriving in about two hours. After settling into your hotel, begin your exploration with a walk through the Marienplatz, the city’s main square, where you can witness the famous Glockenspiel show. Then wander through the nearby Viktualienmarkt, a lively food market perfect for sampling Bavarian snacks and beer. In the evening, consider dining in a traditional beer hall like Hofbräuhaus, a Munich institution.

Day 6: Day at Leisure in Munich

Begin your day with a visit to Nymphenburg Palace, the lavish former summer residence of Bavarian royalty. Then explore the English Garden, one of Europe’s largest city parks, where you might spot river surfers on the Eisbach wave. Art lovers can head to the Pinakothek museums for masterpieces from the Renaissance to modern day. As evening approaches, unwind with a riverside stroll or enjoy a hearty meal of sausages and pretzels at one of Munich’s cozy beer gardens.

Day 7: Final Day in Munich

Spend your last full day diving deeper into Munich’s rich culture. Visit the BMW Museum or the somber and educational Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site just outside the city. Alternatively, take a relaxing day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, the fairy-tale palace that inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Back in Munich, toast your journey with one last stein of beer and enjoy a final taste of Bavarian hospitality.

Day 8: Depart Munich for the US

Head to Munich International Airport for your return flight home, filled with memories of alpine landscapes, historic cities, and the warm hospitality of both Germany and Austria
