Tour Itinerary at a Glance
Helsinki, Tallinn and Stockholm Getaway
-
Day 1: Depart the US for Helsinki Take an overnight flight from the US to Finland’s capital, Helsinki. Located on the beautiful shores of the Gulf of Finland in the country’s south, Helsinki’s heart is a rich tapestry of art, architecture, and culture just waiting to be disovered.
-
**Day 2: Day at Leisure in Helsinki ** A former World Design Capital, there’s certainly no shortage of style on Helsinki’s central streets, with modern glass and steel office buildings standing side by side elegant Jugend (art nouveau) structures. There’s probably no better way to get to grips with the city than to stroll from café to café, stopping off at must-see museums and locations. Don’t miss the National Museum of Finland, or Senate Square, home to the parliament building and national cathedral.
-
Day 3: Day at Leisure in Helsinki A second day at leisure in Helsinki gives you the opportunity to really get to know ‘the White City of the North.’ With its shoreline location playing such an important role in its history, there’s no better way to do this that combining a cruise along the Gulf of Finland with a trip to one of the country’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Suomenlinna Fortress. Situated on no less than eight islands, it was built in the eighteenth-century and is today the most popular day-trip from the capital.
-
Day 4: Travel by Sea from Helsinki to Tallinn Estonia Enjoy the two hour ferry crossing of the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia’s ornate capital. It’s medieval Old Town was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 thanks to its levels of preservation, while elsewhere visitors will find a thriving, cosmopolitan city considered one of the best in the world to live and work.
-
Day 5: Day at Leisure in Tallinn If you didn’t get a chance to explore it fully yesterday, the first item on today’s itinerary should be Tallinn Old Town, whose ancient lanes are perfect for walking. Then consider joining a bus tour to take in sights including Kadriorg Palace, constructed by Russia’s Tsar Peter the Great in 1718. Today, it functions as one of the country’s finest art museums, surrounded by exemplary gardens. End the day by joining the locals at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on Toompea Hill in time for sunset over this beguiling city.
-
Day 6: Travel from Tallinn to Stockholm Sweden Begin the day walking the short mile-long section of Tallinn’s surviving medieval town walls, complete with 20 defensive towers. Then, for a complete change of scene, head to Telliskivi Creative City, an area of warehouses turned into boutiques, lively restaurants and alluring cafes. Come evening, you’ll board the cruiseship-style overnight ferry to Stockholm in Sweden, sleeping in an inside cabin with TV and private WC and shower.
-
Day 7: Day at Leisure in Stockholm Justifiably called ‘the Venice of the North’ due to its spread over 14 islands in the Baltic Sea, Stockholm has to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities – even its subway (metro) system is reknowned for its décor, and sometimes given the title of ‘the longest art gallery on Earth.’ Above ground, there is plenty to keep visitors occupied, with 100 fascinating museums to choose between, including the Vasa Museum, housing the recovered wreck of a seventeenth-century warship which sank on its maiden voyage from Stockholm Harbor in 1638.
-
Day 8: Day at Leisure in Stockholm Beyond the obvious attractions of central Stockholm, consider the 15 minute walk to Langholmen Island, known for its sea swimming, walking trails, and beach popular for picnics. Or swap the grass of Langolmen for the stalls of the Hornstutt neighborhood’s market, selling vintage and handicrafts alongside a range of street food options, for a local feel. Should you need to relax, saunas are dotted about the city in some incredible locations.
-
Day 9: Fly back from Stockholm to the US Transfer to Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport, where your tour of northern Europe’s capitals comes to an end and you return to the US."
