Ideas for Your Vacation
Spend a few days getting to know the beauty of Stockholm, the Swedish capital. Travel between its 14 islands by boat, stop off at world-renowned attractions, and absorb the atmosphere of a city often considered one of the best in the world to live and work in. Contrast this with the journey to Lapland in Sweden’s far north on the evocative night train. Stay for two nights at the internationally-acclaimed Ice Hotel, which acts as a perfect base for exploring the traditions of the region, before returning to Stockholm by air.
8 Day / 7 Nights Itinerary
- Day 1: Fly overnight from US to Stockholm, Sweden.
- Board your flight for the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Spread across 14 islands on the shores of the Baltic Sea, the so-called ‘Venice of the North’ proudly presents a myriad of sights, including a wonderfully-historic Old Town of cobbled streets, a welcoming reputation, and a contemporary stylishness that has it rival Paris.
- Day 2: Day at leisure in Stockholm.
- With more than a dozen islands forming the city, as a visitor you’ll never be too far from the water, and taking a boat cruise is a great way of becoming orientated with Sweden’s largest conurbation. Harbor Boat Tours provide alternative views of the main sights, while hop-on hop-off ferries will get you to attractions including the Vasamuseet (Vasa Museum). Built to house the rescued remains of a sunken seventeenth-century battleship, an afternoon spent here is always worthwhile.
- Day 3: Day at leisure in Stockholm.
- Slip on your walking shoes for a gentle stroll through Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old Town. Dominated by cobbled streets lined with buildings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it is also home to the thirteenth century Storkyrkan Cathedral, and the Royal Palace. Still the Swedish monarch’s official residence, the Royal Palace is open daily for tours of the royal apartments, Hall of State, Treasury, and Tre Kronor Palace Museum. End the day admiring the sunset from the Norr Malastrand trail, providing views back across Gamla Stan, or perhaps join the locals at a waterside sauna instead.
- Day 4: ravel from Stockholm to Kiruna.
- Enjoy a lazy morning coffee to the sight of yachts at anchor on Strandvagen, one of Stockholm’s most prestigious streets. Its mile length is packed with palatial structures, and runs towards the Swedish History Museum. Arguably one of the country’s finest national collections, the museum contains 10 million artefacts spanning 10,000 years for an all-encompassing pass through Sweden’s former eras. If you’re more of a pop fan, the ABBA Museum is just across the bridge in Djurgards. Either way, be sure to leave enough energy to board your private sleeping compartment of the overnight train to Kiruna, in the far north of Swedish Lapland.
- Day 5: Overnight in Sweden’s Famous Ice Hotel.
- Arriving into Kiruna, you’ll make your way to the iconic Ice Hotel, where you’ll be staying overnight in one of its Kaamos (Warm) Rooms. Offering modern comforts in the heart of Lapland, the warm room ensures a cozy stay while you marvel at the Ice Hotel’s artistry and design. Step outside to embrace the Arctic environment and, if luck is on your side, witness the ethereal Northern Lights.
- Day 6: Explore Kiruna and the Ice Hotel.
- Enjoy another night in the comfort of your Kaamos (Warm) Room at the Ice Hotel as you explore the wonders of Swedish Lapland. Engage in optional activities such as snowmobile tours, ice sculpting lessons, dog sledding, and hiking. Whether adventuring through the pristine wilderness or relaxing indoors, this day offers a perfect balance of excitement and tranquility.
- Day 7: Return to Stockholm.
- Return to Stockholm by air on a domestic flight lasting just 1.5 hours. Although short, there is plenty of time to take in the Lapland wilderness from the seat of your plane before landing back in Stockholm, where you will overnight. Take the opportunity of being back in the Swedish capital to do a little last-minute souvenir shopping, or take advantage of the city’s excellent style to buy yourself some Scandinavian fashion to show off back home.
- Day 8: Fly from Stockholm to the US.
- Board your international flight for the US saying one final goodbye to the Venice of the North.
