With nights in Montreux, Interlaken and Chur in turn, experience both the historic and the contemporary sides of Swiss life, coming to understand how the country’s geography has shaped the national character. Then cross the Alps on the staggeringly beautiful journey of the Bernina Express to Italy, ending in ever-stylish Milan, where grand shopping arcades are as much works of art as da Vinci’s Last Supper.
Itinerary
Day 1: Depart for Geneva, Switzerland
Depart the US on an overnight flight to Geneva, Switzerland’s second-most populous city and one of the world’s most livable.
Day 2: Arrive in Montreux
Take the train between Geneva Airport and the resort town of Montreux. Situated on Lake Geneva’s shores, Montreux has a sublime pedigree, combining forested walking trails, panoramic mountain views, and famed vineyards.
Day 3: Leisure Day in Montreux
Head for Montreux’s lakefront, where you’ll find attractions including the medieval Chateau de Chillon. Nearby, Chaplin’s World and the Queen Studio Experience can take you into the professional and private lives of Charlie Chaplin and Freddie Mercury. Alternatively, satisfy your taste buds with the ‘chocolate train’ to Gruyeres, to discover the secrets of this famed cheese, followed by Broc, home of Cailler chocolate.
Day 4: Travel to Interlaken
Swap the delights of Montreux for those of Interlaken, offering views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains. You may prefer to upgrade to the GoldenPass Express, with luxurious carriages and large panoramic windows ideal for photographing the passing scenery.
Day 5: Leisure Day in Interlaken
Make the most of Swiss trains by taking the Jungfraujoch Railway to the highest station in Europe, at 11,330 feet. Or jump aboard the funicular to Harder Kulm viewpoint, Interlaken’s ‘local mountain,’ or cruise Lake Thun to experience the town from the water.
Day 6: Travel to Chur
Switzerland’s oldest settlement, Chur dates back some 5,000 years. It’s old town is packed with historic buildings, from traditional marketplaces to the unusual triple-naved cathedral, dating to 1154.
Day 7: Join the Famous Bernina Express Red Train to Milan, Italy
If Chur’s treasures weren’t already enough, it’s also home to the Bernina Express, a train whose epic engineering achievements (including 196 bridges and 55 tunnels) is only bested by its Alpine scenery. The four-hour journey takes you across the border to Tirano, Italy, from where a change of train soon sees you arrive into Milan. Architecturally and culturally very different to Switzerland, Italy’s second biggest city is famed for two things: its boutique shopping, and da Vinci’s Last Supper.
Day 8: Fly Home
If you have time before your flight, take in Milan’s magical duomo (cathedral) before heading to the canals of the Navigli District, packed with cafes from which to watch the world go by.
