19th-Century Bed and Breakfast Near the Green Mountains
In 1846, a stagecoach stop was built in the foothills of southern Vermont's Green Mountains. Travelers would stop at this way station—one of many along a stagecoach line stretching from Montreal to southern New England—to rehitch a new horse team, grab a bite at the tavern, and rest in one of three guest rooms. More than 160 years later, these original bedrooms and nine additional rooms furnished with 19th-century antiques make up the West Dover Inn. A Greek Revival–style bed and breakfast with an imposing two-story porch, the West Dover Inn has become the centerpiece of town.
On the second floor, the inn’s North suite reflects its colonial roots with an antique wooden secretary and a sleigh bed. Downstairs in the Mount Snow suite, a crackling fireplace and jacuzzi tub sets the stage for a cozy evening. Historic Room 6, one of the inn's three original 1846 bedrooms, exudes country charm with quilted bedding and knotted hardwood floors. Chefs at the 1846 Tavern and Restaurant prepare New England seafood specialties and homemade pastas. With a $15 dining credit, guests can sample pan-seared sea scallops ($29) during a fireside dinner or pair homemade mac 'n' cheese ($13) with a pint of locally brewed Otter Creek Copper Ale. In an included picnic lunch, the staff packs chips and sandwiches in an over-the-shoulder cooler, ideal for taking on a hike on Mount Snow or for keeping cheese wallets cold.
