Upscale Downtown Hotel Linked to Minneapolis Skyway

One of the largest indoor pedestrian walkways in the world can be found in Minneapolis, connecting office buildings to shopping centers through 11 miles of indoor thoroughfares. Some have praised them as the city's version of the canals in Venice. And on some days, especially during the city's brisk winters, the streets downtown can appear deserted as the hustle and bustle converges on the network of glass tunnels. You can stroll from a dinner at a soup joint to a concert at the Target Center without ever setting foot outside. One link in the chain of the Minneapolis Skyway system is The Westin Minneapolis, which sits within the historic 1940s Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank building. Stepping inside, you’ll see the 34-foot vaulted ceiling soaring over what was once the bank’s lobby.

The Westin’s restaurant, fittingly named Bank, is also located in the vast main hall. Its menu features locally sourced ingredients in a variety of creative regional dishes, such as farm hen with mac 'n' cheese and tater hot dish, a quirky indigenous potato specialty.

Traditional rooms come decorated in soothing earth tones. The hotel has an indoor pool for splashing, and you can enter the Skyway system for a self-guided tour of downtown when it’s time to stretch your legs.

Downtown Minneapolis: Bountiful Performing-Arts Scene near Idyllic Lakes

Minneapolis is said to have more live theater shows per capita than any other US city except New York. Broadway spectacles grace the stage steps from experimental spaces mounting new plays, and a slew of local coffee shops and bars provides ample opportunities for post-show discussion. Dozens of eclectic galleries complement the wide-ranging exhibits at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, which showcases works such as Japanese woodcut prints and turn-of-the-century European advertisements.

Less than a half-mile stroll from The Westin, you’ll find Nicollet Mall, a pedestrian-friendly shopping zone that doesn't allow cars. It's also home to the iconic statue of Mary Tyler Moore tossing her 10-gallon stetson into the air. For a look at five of Minnesota's purported 10,000 lakes, a 10-minute drive from downtown brings you to the Chain of Lakes, a quintet of picturesque bodies of water linked by 12 miles of walking and biking paths.

1 small issue with room service not replenishing bathroom amenities at all during 3 night stay. Even after making a call to have them do so.

The only dissapointment was the rom was warm, 73, and they were not able to fix the problem. Unfortunately, the hotel was booked and we could not be moved.
