Bristol, Rhode Island: Patriotic Port Town North of Newport

The port town of Bristol has seen a lot in three centuries. In the 1680s, the first battle of King Philip’s War was fought here. Bristol’s 1785 Fourth of July celebration, the first of many, was attended by active participants of the Revolutionary War. Today, the celebration lasts a whopping three weeks, and its Independence Day parade draws some 200,000 spectators. It’s believe to be the country’s oldest continual Fourth of July celebration.

Due to its coastal location, Bristol has a long and proud history of shipbuilding and maritime activity. In fact, more than one America’s Cup–winning yacht was constructed on Bristol’s shores. Not coincidentally, the town is home to the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, as part of the Herreshoff Marine Museum.

Thanks to its abundance of well-preserved buildings, Bristol’s town center is listed on National Register of Historic Places. For a look at even more impressive architecture, make the 15-mile trek down to Newport. Here, you can tour spectacular mansions once owned by the Astors, the Vanderbilts, and other Gilded Age titans.
