Days 1–3: New Delhi and Old Delhi

The vacation begins with a tour of New Delhi, India's capital city and home to the 13th-century Qutb Minar tower and the presidential palace.

Afterward, you'll venture northward to Old Delhi, which Fodor's calls "the greatest of Delhi's palace cities." The most iconic of Old Delhi's imperial palaces is arguably the Red Fort, a marvel of red sandstone that epitomizes India's classic Mughal architecture.

You have the option of taking a trishaw tour of Chandni Chowk, a dynamic marketplace that enchants with sparkling wedding dresses, sticky-sweet confections, and musicians performing ceremonial kirtan songs.

Days 4–6: Lodi Gardens, Chomu Palace, and Jaipur

Before heading southwest to Chomu, the tour takes a stop at Lodi Gardens. The romantic park, which the New York Times calls "the city's pièce de résistance," sprawls over 90 acres, including centuries-old royal tombs and more than a hundred types of trees.

Located a few hours farther south, Chomu Palace is an opulent, 300-year-old palace-turned-hotel that sits near a lively bazaar and will serve as your accommodations for the evening.

During a drive into nearby Jaipur, you’ll see why the city has earned the nickname of "the pink city." Many of its buildings give off a pinkish hue indicative of Jaipur's decadent persona. Just north of the city is Amber Fort, a palace on a hill—ride an elephant to approach the fort in a traditional way. Inside the lakeside palace, hundreds of tiny mirrors dazzle visitors in the Chamber of Mirrors.

Days 7–9: Agra, Taj Mahal, and Temples of Khajuraho

The Taj Mahal is the pinnacle of your time in Agra and maybe the entire trip. Known as one of the most elaborate structures ever built, the domed marble palace was named one of the new seven wonders of the world. Take a train ride and a drive via Orcha Palace to Khajuraho, known for its magnificent temples, which are among the most creative examples of Indian architecture.

Days 10–11: Varanasi Silk Factory, Ganges River Cruise

The Ganges River remains one of the most sacred sites to Hinduism’s devotees. On a cruise along the Ganges, you can witness Hindus partaking in spiritual cleansing rituals at the Manikarnika ghat, a landing where pilgrims gather to enter the river.
