My fiance and I were completely blown away with our entire experience. We have never been to Belize and, since flights were not included, I was a bit worried to make sure I booked everything properly. Yok Ha worked with me and the entire process was so simple and great. We flew into Belize City, took a hopper flight (one of our favorite parts of the trip!) to Dangriga, and were boated out to Yok Ha's tiny, beautiful island. The colorful huts, the food, the sunrise/sunsets, the crystal clear water, and the staff were all incredible. Also, the price couldn't be beat. I spoke to a couple on our flight back home, who had stayed on the main island of Belize for a wedding, that said they were sad about the water being so muddy. It made me so happy we chose to be out on an island in the middle of the beautiful blue ocean! No complaints. We are constantly looking for a time to go back. LOVED IT! All of it. Highly recommend.

Located on a small island off the coast of Belize, this resort features cabanas, scuba diving, and a private beach; all meals included

Resort at a Glance: Yok Ha Resort

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-longest reef in the world. It’s dotted with hundreds of islands, or cays, just off the coast of Belize. Eight miles from the mainland, Yok Ha Resort has one of these private Caribbean cays all to itself. The resort comprises five brightly colored cabanas scattered along the edge of the Caribbean Sea. One is red with yellow trim, another is fuchsia, and a royal-blue unit opens onto a yellow-and-orange porch. Some have ocean views and private verandas.

  • Eat well at Chief’s Place, which serves complimentary meals including three-course dinners with fresh seafood specials.
  • Explore offshore coral reefs with a guided snorkeling trip, which is included in this Getaway if you book for July or August.
  • Outdoor adventure: The resort also offers a number of half- and full-day tours, including one that takes you to Belize’s famous Jaguar Preserve (additional fees apply).

Stann Creek, Belize: Mayan Ruins, World-Renowned Scuba Diving, and Exotic Wildlife

Located along the coast on the southeastern section of Belize, the district of Stann Creek is one of Belize’s top tourist destinations. The Mayans occupied this region as early as AD 250, and its interior landscape is strewn with impressive ancient ruins set against the Maya Mountains. Today, people come to Stann Creek to see these ruins, enjoy the tropical climate, and visit the area’s eco-tourism destinations.

Opportunities for hiking, river tubing, snorkeling, and scuba diving abound in Stann Creek. The Belize Barrier Reef—the world’s second-longest reef—runs the length of the coastline. There eagle rays, octopuses, dolphins, sharks, and other fascinating creatures inhabit its cays and atolls. You can also see exotic wildlife at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar reserve. Located just 10 miles from the Caribbean, the sanctuary was created to keep the jaguar from extinction. Visitors can follow the well-kept trails that cut through the 160-square-mile park, home to howler monkeys, pumas, ocelots, toucans, and much more.

Visit the nearby Dangriga, the capital of the Stann Creek District, and historically home to the Garifuna people. The coastal town is still devoted to its Afro-Caribbean heritage; many residents communicate with their ancestors through dancing and drumming circles.
