From the Space Crusades of 1997 to the War of 1812, history’s greatest battles have always hinged on the aim of a laser. Partake in this futuristic tradition with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get two hours of laser-tag combat, including gun rental and vest, from Galaxy Gaming (a $20 value). These outdoor sessions are held in Harrisburg on Sunday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you want to play for more than two hours or join a longer event, use today’s Groupon toward the cost and simply pay the difference.
A far cry from glow-in-the-dark indoor laser games, Galaxy’s outdoor sessions craft realistic battlefields on which groups of friends, coworkers, and pigmy marmosets conduct role-playing scenarios. Missions include acting as a bodyguard for an assigned Very Important Person, ferrying them to safety while other designated ambushers attempt to eliminate the VIP; Running Man–style games in which hunters hunt snipers and snipers snipe hunters; and a team match similar to Capture the Flag, but with a steady flow of laser-powered alarums and excursions.
Combat is performed with laser guns from Battlefield Live, manufacturers of top-shelf gaming guns that realistically mimic AK-47s, Uzis, and more. The realistic look and feel of Battlefield Live guns heightens the immersive quality of the role-play, making them far preferable to gaming guns that mimic the sounds of wind across empty plains and the plaintive voice of your childhood best friend. To make sure you don’t spend another boring weekend blasting a bunch of strangers in storm-trooper uniforms on a moon-sized space station, buy extra Galaxy Gaming Groupons as gifts for any friends you like but sometimes want to shoot.
Call ahead to reserve your spot.
Though there are no reviews for the laser-tag combat, check out what the Sioux Falls Competitive Video Gaming Examiner has to say about Galaxy Gaming:
- If you're in Sioux Falls and are looking for a place to hang out with other people who enjoy playing games of any type, then Galaxy is the place to go. – Alek Bohlman
Armed with state-of-the-art lasers, players dodge enemy beams in a 5,000-square-foot arena awash in neon and black lights. During open-play sessions held Friday–Sunday, up to 14 participants weave their way through the obstacle-laden space on a variety of missions. The lasers also function outside, enabling Galaxy Gaming to frequently host outdoor missions in yards with enough obstacles.
Competition continues in the gaming lounge, where more than 200 computer and console games run on more than 60 PC, PlayStation3, and Xbox 360 stations. Gamers can play friends or other patrons with all-day passes or during Friday and Saturday all-night sessions, which last from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. or whenever Mario throws out his back. Galaxy Gaming's resident techies also rid computers of viruses, build custom PCs, and create personalized gaming rigs.
