The Garden State Rollergirls, New Jersey's all-female, flat-track roller-derby league, is comprised of local teams of strong, sexy skaters. The object of a game is for a player to skate around the track while offensively and defensively hitting and passing girls on the opposing team. This intoxicatingly entertaining sport plays by mottos such as "bruises are badges of glory" and "skate like the badass, tough-as-nails rollergirls we are," which is why each player has a pseudonym to reflect her style of play such as "Lady Vengeance," "I Don't Care Bear," and "First Derby, Might Have Just Wet My Pants."
Ladies with wheeled feet have been steamrolling each other for decades, but only recently has the sport reemerged as a fan favorite. The Garden State Rollergirls roll through the games with all the fervor of their foremothers, and because the organization is skater owned and operated, each player is as in tune with the game as a turtle is with its shell. Though seating is not assigned, artfully orchestrated chaos on every inch of the track means you’re bound to be close to the action no matter where you sit.
