A tortilla makes a handy mouse pad, an acceptable patch for stiff denim jeans, and, if you draw a face on it, an ideal companion on fishing trips. But there are many other uses for it, as today's Groupon proves: for $10, you get $20 worth of modern Mexican cuisine at Garrido's, located downtown. Reservations are recommended on nights and weekends. Today's deal can be used toward palate-pleasing plates during happy hour (Monday through Friday, 4 p.m.–7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.–7 p.m.).

Because there is no word for breakfast in Spanish, Garrido's menu focuses exclusively on Mexico's three official meals: lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch in small-plate formats. The brunch menu lets you kick off a weekend of trampolining with an order of migas blancas ($6.75), an egg-white creation smothered in asadero cheese and pico de gallo with a side of black beans. You can also design your own breakfast taco ($2.00–$2.50 for one) without requiring architectural approval from Austin's zoning board. Start your pre-prom dinner and pre-post-prom apology with an order of lamb pops ($11.50), served with plantain chips and garlic-ancho sauce, before moving on to the crispy panko fried shrimp ($17.95), served adjacent to slaw and rice. Or try the steak vaquero ($19.95), which comes grilled to order and drizzled with a tomatillo horseradish sauce. Traditionalists and taco eaters alike will appreciate the eatery's nine gourmet varieties of the folded favorite, including the coffee-marinated rib-eye taco ($4.50) and the fresh fish BLT taco ($3.75) with habanero aioli. The lunch menu features pared-down plates of dinner favorites for easy office getaways, as well as pared-down crowds and wait times.

Garrido's tree-cloistered, creek-side patio offers a refreshing respite for world-weary urbanites and even more world-weary immortals. It's also the best place to enjoy a meal-concluding cup of flan ($4.25) with mango and habanero honey in the warm summer breeze, or split a chocolate tres-leches cake ($4.50) infused with Patron Café XO with your cat's lawyer after a long day of arraignments. Two Groupons can be combined for dinner only, so invite along a date, a few friends, or the heads of the other Five Families for a sumptuous cena at Garrido's.

The Austin Chronicle reviewed Garrido's, and Yelpers give it 3.5 stars. Three Citysearchers give it 4.5 stars, and Urbanspooners give it a 73% approval rating.

  • Garrido's has capitalized wonderfully on its Shoal Creek setting to create a relaxed, Shady Grove feel. The happy-hour sunsets go perfectly with a house mojito or one of the many other cocktails and well-priced wines offered. Who says urban living has to be stressful? – Katherine Gregor, Austin Chronicle
  • Garrido's tacos are more like a modernized version of authentic Mexico City fare than Tex Mex, and they are very creative and quite good. – Mark Denton, Urbanspoon

Garrido's Patio Dining

Chef David Garrido has been creating a buzz in the Austin dining scene for years. And people have taken notice. The former chef at the popular fine-dining establishment Jeffrey's was invited to the James Beard House in New York City and to open a Jeffrey's at the Watergate in Washington DC. He has also appeared on the Food Network show Chopped and did Dancing with Stars Austin.

At Garrido's Patio Dining, he combines fresh, local, and organic ingredients into his New World Latino cuisine—his playful twist on traditional Mexican recipes. Garrido whips up lamb chops coated in a chile-honey demiglaze and topped with mango-cilantro yogurt, and he stuffs tacos with creative ingredients such as coffee-rubbed steak and gulf snapper. He also fries oysters and piles them atop yucca root chips, and then sends the dish out with habanero honey aioli.

Diners enjoy these dishes outside on the patio, which overlooks picturesque Shoal Creek and cools patrons off with misters and fans. They can also dine inside, where live music and refreshing cocktails—including watermelon-jalapeño margaritas and mojitos made with fresh mint—inspire dance competitions to determine who takes home leftovers. The restaurant is open for dinner seven days a week and brunch Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
