I normally buy their gelato at Whole Foods, the Groupon was an incentive for me to go to their shop. It was very cute and the gelato was yummy!

What You'll Get

If the cruel temptations of the Play-Doh Fun Factory taught the world anything, it's that mouthwatering creations are more gratifying when they're actually edible. Swoop spoon-first into a scoop of icy eats with today's deal: for $5, you get $10 worth of artisan Italian ice cream and more at Gelato Gilberto in Prospect.

After two years of scoping out the best scoops in Italy, Justin and Kristin Gilbert put their research to good use and opened up Gelato Gilberto. The frozen treatery takes pride in preparing all of its creamy concoctions in the traditional Italian fashion, including storing and serving the sweets at a slightly warmer temperature than American ice cream to enhance flavor and decrease the risk of freezy brain. And because gelato is prepared primarily with milk, not cream, it provides a healthier alternative to high-fat after-dinner treats such as chocolate cake and four chocolate cakes.

Every batch of Gilberto's gelato starts with a made-from-scratch base of locally sourced dairy products and cage-free eggs, to which meticulous measurements of seasonal produce are added. The store's extensive list of fun, fresh flavors offers something for everyone, whether you are a by-the-book chocoholic looking for a no-frills fix ($2.95 for a small cup of chocolate) or a fickle Gilligan's Islandophile who needs to counter the bowl of Mary Ann you had for breakfast ($4.95 for a large cup of ginger). If you're at Gelato Gilberto for a romantic rendezvous, prove your thoughtfulness to your date by requesting that your chilly treat be cloaked in a warm crêpe ($3.95). Even those who are lactose intolerant can get in on the action, since Gelato Gilberto serves up sophisticated dairy-free sorbetto flavors such as prosecco, margarita, Anjou pear, and lemon raspberry ($3.95 for a medium). Featured flavors change daily.

CityVoters chose Gelato Gilberto as one of 2008's Top 5 Best Ice Cream Shops in Louisville. Louisville magazine and Metromix featured the shop. Eighty-two percent of Urbanspooners recommend it, and CityVoters give it five stars:

  • A cozy cafe-like setting, Gelato Gilberto is reminiscent of the apothecary or creamery that you may have had as a child. With the invention of blizzards and frozen yogurt, who knew fresh Gelato could be so delicately preserved? – Metromix
  • Very knowledgeable on gelato and very authentic. Very fresh, delicious flavors and a wide selection that changes frequently. – Rachel Michelle Hardin, Urbanspoon
  • Excellent gelato! The flavor selection is unique and delicious! – belljd, CityVoter

About Gelato Gilberto

Justin and Kristin Gilbert spent three years in Italy, visiting gelaterie in more than 20 cities to mine artisanal secrets before opening their own shop. In choreographed musical numbers, the duo handcraft dense, flavor-packed gelato in small batches using local milk and fresh fruit. From a repertoire of more than 100 recipes, Justin and Kristin curate 20 flavors at a time. Past and present flavors include poached-pear zinfandel, orange-ginger dairy-free sorbetto, and chocolate orange—one of Justin's favorites, according to a feature in Louisville Magazine. Delicate crêpes conceal Nutella or lemon and sugar. The cozy shop also sends forth its mobile cart to cater office snack breaks, weddings with as many as 2000 guests, and Roman legions on the march.
