Rosemary Richardson and Sarah Thomas, Gemstone Equestrian’s mother-daughter coaching team, employ their substantial experience to help students hone their riding skills at year-round indoor and outdoor facilities. Pony pilots embark on their equine-propelled educations on a steed from Gemstone's fleet of friendly horses, ensuring a trotting session free of passive-aggressive whinnies. Group lessons enable nascent jockeys to steer their carrot-powered vehicles around the indoor or outdoor facilities in ensembles of no more than four pupils, a small class size that grants participants individualized attention and sufficient trotting space. Alternatively, a one-hour private lesson affords riders one-on-one instruction, supplying fledgling saddle-sitters with ample attention and letting the seasoned pupils explore their choice of riding style, such as dressage. Riders can practice the art of fence evasion with a lesson focused on hunter/jumper skills, or develop the aptitude to deftly negotiate barrels and clown-shaped tumbleweeds with a Western riding tutorial.
All lessons include a helmet rental to keep horses from intercepting riders’ thoughts, and Gemstone Equestrian has a limited number of riding boots available on-site for use during lessons. Equine scholars must cloak legs in long pants and swaddle feet in boots with a small heel, as those wearing sneakers, sandals, or horseshoes cannot be permitted to participate.
On their 25-acre parcel of scenic countryside, Rosemary Richardson and Sarah Thomas, Gemstone Equestrian’s mother-daughter team, teach students to ride properly and respect their equine friends. Lessons are held year-round either outside or within the indoor facilities and cater to riders of all experience levels, whether they aim to ride recreationally or for competition. Students choose among the riding arts of dressage, which stresses obedience and balance; hunter/jumper, which takes place on the hunter course or jumper ring; and Western, which focuses on how to visit the Pacific by hitching a skateboard to a team of wild horses. No matter the riding style, safety remains of utmost importance—the center offers ASTM–approved helmets for no extra charge and caps lessons at a 1:2 staff-to-student ratio for beginners and 1:4 for experienced riders.
