A Chat with Genevieve Lauren Photography
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
We are a boutique heirloom photography company and focus heavily on personal attention. We like to make sure that you know what you can expect before showing up so you can just have fun and let us show your best side.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
12 years ago I was in editorial portraiture and fashion, but after shooting a friends weddings and seeing how meaningful those images were to her and her family, I realized there was no better way to use my talent than to create family heirlooms for all kinds of beautiful people.
What do you love most about your job?
The connection between myself and my subject. Having your photo taken can be a nerve wracking experience for many, so I like to take the time to put you at ease, crack a joke, have some fun, and bring the most beautiful part of you out in your images.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
I was hired to shoot a family portrait where the youngest child was terminally ill. It was very emotional for everyone and the sister who hired me told me that there was no one in the world that could have given her such a beautiful gift as those memories. Its the reason I do this kind of work.

The winner of multiple Wedding Photojounalist Association awards and one of Brides UK's top 25 destination photographers, Genevieve Burruss captures candid shots and dramatic poses that brim with vintage appeal. When she isn't behaving as a fly on the wall at weddings—preserving close-up shots of the bride getting ready or joyous stills of dancing guests—she uses abandoned buildings and Chicago's iconic sites as backdrops for portraits and engagement photos. After sessions, she often retreats to her Photoshop lair to make skillful tweaks that heighten the drama or add a touch of muted sophistication, producing softly lit black-and-white shots and low-contrast color prints that have the timeless appeal of a little black dress dipped in ice cream.
