GEPCI Sportswear & Team Apparel clothes patrons in custom screen-printed and embroidered clothing for all occasions. Over a three-hour workshop, pupils learn to graft their own designs onto vellum stencils from photographs or black-and-white drawings. Students introduce each stencil to a monochrome ink by pressing on a manual print screen, gently coaxing pigment through their image onto their final T-shirt canvas. By submitting their potential design ahead of time, student can allow the instructors to greet their pigment protégés with a sample rendering in Photoshop and Illustrator at the session’s start. Pupils hone their new craft on two white 100% cotton shirts in their choice of size, which they can keep, give as gifts, or wave defiantly at the next turtleneck convention.
Origin Stories: You Can Run, but the Colors Won’t
Though Matt stepped up to lead his family’s screen-printing venture in 2003, he actually gave his father the original idea for it in 1980, when he was thrilled over a printing lesson at a childhood art camp. Some of Matt’s proudest works are the apple-themed T-shirts he prints for the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure—a job sweetened by his wife’s own triumph over breast cancer. One recent customer, an elementary-school student, took a celebratory run outside in the 95-degree heat to show off his navy, gold, and white spirit-week sweatshirt. Matt also coaches (and, naturally, designs uniforms for) the Fallston High School Cougars boys’ lacrosse team.
