Nikon 1 J1 Digital SLR Camera (Manufacturer Refurbished)

The Nikon 1 J1 simplifies the art of taking great pictures while putting more power in the hands of photographers.

Crisp, Sharp Images

The Nikon 1 J1 has two types of autofocus: focal-plane phase-detection AF, which is great for capturing fast movement, and contrast-detection AF, which captures subtle details even in poor lighting. The hybrid system picks the right autofocus for the scene, and fast, continuous shooting speeds give photographers plenty of shots to choose from.

Simultaneous Photos and Full-HD Movies

The camera can capture full-HD movies and high-resolution stills at the same time, so you don't have to choose between capturing a picture of a tiny turtle eating a strawberry or a movie of a tiny turtle eating a strawberry. The slow-motion movie function can be set to different speeds for different effects.

Simple Design

Most cameras are loaded with buttons you'll never press and modes you'll never use. The Nikon 1 J1 simplifies all that. The mode dial only has four functions: still image, movie, motion snapshot, and smart photo selector. That makes finding the right setting easier, so you can get to shooting quicker.

  • CX format CMOS sensor
  • Nikon 1 mount
  • EXPEED 3 high-speed image-processing engine
  • Active D-Lighting captures detail in high-contrast environments
  • Picture Control system with six settings
  • Focal-plane phase-detection and contrast-detect autofocus
  • Maximum 10fps in AF-A mode or 60fps in AF-S mode
  • Captures full-HD video (1080/60i)
  • Slow-motion video
  • Simplified mode dial with four functions
  • Scene auto-selector mode
  • Built-in flash
  • Silent electronic shutter
  • 3" LCD monitor with high resolution
  • Motion snapshots
  • Smart photo selector

I'm not impressed. The camera takes great close up pictures... but, as far as I can tell, the flash doesn't work. It will pop up but it doesn't flash, whether it's set to flash or set to auto. Plus it's reasonably clunky and the lens needs to be maneuvered by hand (can't zoom in and out with a button)... which is okay I guess, if you're not trying to run around while taking pictures. The lens is a lot more high maintenance than I was expecting also; you have to physically put the cap back on it to keep it from getting scratched (and keep up with it in the mean time). I'm going to stick with my little point and shoot camera.

I find the camera difficult to use. I usually take pictures at night, dusk, or dawn and there's no way to see the buttons in the dark. My other camera is a Samsung which has a touch screen so it's great in the dark. Also, I've found the interface very clunky--maybe for the same reason--and have had trouble doing custom settings though I haven't yet taken the time to research how do it--I think it should be intuitive enough to find on my own.

I'm still learning how to use it and I haven't watched the instructional dvd or read the booklet yet so I could tell you more about it in a couple of months, but it seems pretty simple and I've already taken some amazing picture. My son took it on a hike in the mounts and got some extremely frame worthy pictures, very sharp, beautiful colors, just point and shoot mostly, excellent quality pictures.

There is no power telephoto feature, it's a manual operation which requires the rotation of the lens. I believe too that it takes far too long to capture the photo you desire it must therefore be kept on the subject until it "snaps" back to the scene, else the photo comes out blurred. Over all I would not recommend this camera.

I opted for only 1 lens with the camera and it does not zoom the way I expected. Unless you purchased both removable lenses, the camera is not as great as advertised. Also, removing the lens is quite annoying...would have been nice if it came with a case so you do not need to remove the lens every time you put the camera away.

Great little camera! Had been intrigued by the nikon 1 cameras for a long time but didn't want to spend $500-$600. This was a phenomenal deal. Camera is very responsive (auto focus and shutter). Love that it has a manual mode that allows you to control everything a more expensive DSLR would allow. Over all a great little camera.

Very nice smaller camera. I would also look into buying the other lens via amazon that can be sold separately with it simply because it could use more zoom. Other than that it's a great buy. Didn't have any scratches or any thing wrong with it even though it was refurbished.

It was advertised as refurbished. I assumed that meant the issues had been fixed. Unfortunately it didn't. We purchased 2 of them and had to ship them back to Nikon at our expense and time. Meantkme we went out west on vacation and missed family pic

We got this camera for my daughter so she could take it on a school trip to Europe. It worked out great! It was small & light enough to fit in her backpack or purse, easy to use and took awesome pics. We are very happy with our choice.

Even though the camera is a refurb it works like new and it's amazing! I have been using it to document my sons first couple if weeks (I bought it with the intention of using it for him). It's a wonderful camera.
