What Is Pointillism?
Pointillism grew out of the impressionist movement in France in the 1880s. Although the term was originally applied mockingly by critics, pointillist artists were soon recognized for their exacting technique and imaginative application of color theory. One of the most famous works of the period is a pointillist masterpiece: Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte commands instant recognition.
