The Nintendo 2DS combines elements of the 3DS and older DS systems to create a versatile handheld gaming system for both kids and adults. It retains the dual-screen setup that is a signature of the DS systems—main screen on top, touchscreen display on bottom—while boasting the ability to play all 3DS and most DS and DSi games in 2D.

Dual-Screen Display

When you open up the 2DS, you’re greeted with two screens. The top LCD display provides a widescreen view of the game world, uncluttered by menus and interfaces; the lower touchscreen is often used for maps, in-game inventories, and touch-sensitive actions.

Generation-Spanning Game Library

The 2DS gives players access to the vast game libraries of the Nintendo 3DS and its predecessors, the DS and DSi. Gamers can dig up old DS cartridges such as New Super Mario Bros. or Mario Kart DS and play the classics again, or they can pop in 3DS titles such as Monster Hunter 4.

Innovative Social Features

Whenever players head out on a bus, train, or nuclear submarine, the 2DS reaches out to other DS systems nearby with the wireless StreetPass feature, which can unlock exclusive content for games. Players can exchange personalized Mii avatars, battle nearby combatants in fighting games, and share content.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Like many games in the Super Mario Bros. franchise, New Super Mario Bros. 2 burdens superhero-plumbers Mario and Luigi with the task of rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser and his minions. The difference is that there’s a far greater emphasis on collecting coins scattered across more than 80 courses, which are festering with new and classic enemies.
