About Bassett Furniture
After the Norfolk & Western railway line reached completion in 1892, John David Bassett was left with a heap of raw lumber with no immediate purpose. He'd made his living supplying rail ties to the industry, and now he needed a new market for the acres of oak trees that swept over his land in Henry County, Virginia. He began shipping the lumber to factories in the north, which converted it into furniture and shipped it all over the country, including back down south. Recognizing the inefficiency, Basset saw a "tremendous advantage" in building furniture right at the lumber source. In 1902, he opened Bassett Furniture Company with his brothers. Though dressers, washstands, and beds sold for under $5 apiece, the company hit sales of $1 million by 1917.
Over 100 years later, Bassett continues its tradition of building furniture for the country. The men and women who staff its factories build each piece upon order, crafting interlocking frames, tacking on upholstery, and sewing fabric largely by hand. Each piece rolls off the assembly line in the way that only furniture built with a sense of pride can: with the promise of long-lasting durability and comfort.
