Beyoncé: Platinum Edition

On December 13, 2013, Beyoncé threw the music industry a curve ball—and then dropped the mic. That’s the day the singer, who hadn’t delivered a full record since 2011’s 4, secretly released her eponymous album on iTunes. But it wasn’t just new music: Beyoncé also offered fans a full-length video to go with every song. Despite the hush-hush digital-only release, it sold more than 800,000 copies in its first weekend alone.

New Material

The Platinum Edition features all of the songs and videos on the original release, plus dynamic live recordings from The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour and six new songs and remixes. Highlights include “Flawless Remix” featuring Nicki Minaj and “7/11,” which soared in popularity thanks to an accompanying video self-released on YouTube.

Notable Collaborators

Jay Z rapped a verse on smash hit “Drunk in Love,” Drake lent his rapping and singing talents to “Mine,” and Frank Ocean sang soulful backing vocals on “Superpower.” Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, was even featured on the album’s final track. But perhaps the most important collaborations took place in the studio, where industry powerhouses like Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Timberland, Sia, and many more offered their songwriting and production savvy to help craft Beyoncé.
