About Christian Lacroix

There was a time when Christian Lacroix was sure that he was destined to be a museum curator, studying at the École du Louvre and focusing on art history at the Sorbonne. This explains a lot. After he changed tracks to couture apparel design, his first signature piece was a bouffant, a voluminous skirt also known as a “pouf.” All it takes is one look to see the role historical costuming had in inspiring Lacroix’s style. The pouf was followed by pieces that flaunted Renaissance-inspired silhouettes and rich embroidery or tulle. Lacroix pieces became a status symbol: New York magazine called the French designer’s look “glamorous, expensive-looking, and unapologetically dramatic.” The editor of the New York Social Diary echoed that sentiment, adding that the pieces were “ornamental and apparently frivolous, yet incredible and complicated detailed work.” In more recent years, the “man with the magic paintbrush” has dabbled his bright colors across Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett.
