About Carolina Herrera
The feverish milieu of New York in the ’70s, typified by Studio 54 and Andy Warhol’s Factory crowd, may seem an unlikely incubator for a future outfitter to several First Ladies. Yet Carolina Herrera thrived in those mixed worlds of fashion and excess, a heady state that drove her to produce her first fashion collection in 1980. That line of 24 dresses was a hit; in 1981, a full collection followed. Characterized by their Old Hollywood silhouettes, bright colors, and demure details, Herrera’s gowns have entranced everyone from Renée Zellweger to Laura Bush to Michelle Obama. But to wear Herrera’s designs, one needn’t have a high-profile name or a glamorous entourage—just a strong sense of personal style: as the designer herself said in 1986, “The woman who buys my clothes is very secure. She knows exactly what she is looking for.”
