More Questions and Answers

Q:

I read your comment that jellyfish reproduction in captivity is rare. Is there anything that I could do to promote reproduction so that they are self-renewing, rather than just getting one year of life out of the purchase?

David D.  asked on  Dec 16, 2013

A:

I'm very sorry, but there is not much you can do. Breeding jellyfish is a pretty involved process that requires multiple differently-designed tanks at different parameters. Each stage of the life cycle is sustained in specialized tanks and coaxed to the next stage with careful changes in temperature, salinity, light levels, etc.

Q:

I do not see anything included that would regulate the water temperature. What temperature does the water need to be kept at?

veronica l.  asked on  Dec 18, 2013

A:

Jellyfish require water temperature between 60 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If your average air temperature drops below 60 degrees, you can just add a drop-in heater, which Jellyfish Art sells on their website.

Q:

Do the led lights change automatically or can I set it to one color and leave it?

Destiny C.  asked on  Dec 16, 2013

A:

The tank comes with a remote control so you can set the light to do anything you want. It can stay on 1 of 15 solid colors, or cycle between the colors in a fade, strobe, or other effects.

Q:

Is there a time frame as far as how long we have to redeem the voucher for the actual jellies? Can I order the tank now and the fish in May, for example?

Brittany H.  asked on  Dec 16, 2013

A:

There is no time frame! You can redeem these vouchers at any time.

Q:

I noticed your answer where you say that the medusa swimming stage only lasts two months. Does that mean that one will only have swimming jellyfish (rather than in polyp stage, etc.) for two months? If not, approximately how long will the jellyfish be in the swimming stage where one can see them moving around the tank?

Liz M.  asked on  Dec 14, 2013

A:

On average, the lifespan is 6 - 12 months. They will swim for this length of time. You don't receive jellies in the polyp stage. You will receive swimming medusae.

Q:

Will the pump and filter be concealed or will there be extra tubing exposed? Also are the l.e.d. lights strong enough to make a small lamp?

Jonathan F.  asked on  Dec 12, 2013

A:

The filter is built into the bottom of the tank. In fact, most of the filtration is done by the substrate (spherical gravel) sitting in the bottom of the tank. The air pump is connected to the bottom of the tank out of view via an airline several feet long, so the air pump itself can be concealed.

The tank comes with a 12-watt color-changing LED bulb. It's a common household bulb, so I suppose if you wanted to pull the bulb out and re-purpose it in a lamp, that would be possible.

Q:

How would I go about adding salt water to the tank? Where or how do I get access to it?

Taylor C.  asked on  Dec 15, 2013

A:

Salt water can be purchase or obtained from a local aquarium shop. This could include a pet store that sells salt water aquariums and products for salt water aquariums.

Q:

Once the jellyfish die, can the tank be used for normal fish? Is there anything specific that needs to be done differently with normal fish vs jellyfish?

Brad O.  asked on  Dec 13, 2013

A:

Fish and other animals are also perfectly happy in a jellyfish aquarium!

Q:

If I left this on my desk at work, I wouldn't have access to them over the weekend. I assume they need to be fed daily and would die if left for 2 days without food?

Kimber W.  asked on  Dec 12, 2013

A:

They require daily feeding and a weekly 25% water change and salinity check. It's okay to skip feeding for a weekend, but be sure to feed jellyfish a little extra before and after any long period without feeding.
