Sitting on 8,000 acres in France’s Rhône wine region, the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation is the region’s largest. Even so, its vineyards only produce two wines: one red, one white. Though the white Châteauneuf du Papes have their charms, it’s the reds that make this region famous, accounting for 94% of its wine production. Though its styles vary, all share common notes of red and black cherry; strawberry; black pepper; and garrigue, a term for the juniper, thyme, lavender, and other fresh herbs that grow near the vineyards.
