A:

By default, the GPS will take you on the fastest route, which usually means highways. He may have had the device on a setting to avoid highways.

I have never had a gps, it says it has lifetime maps.So do you ever have to pay for anything to update it?

The Lifetime maps would include free updates for the maps that are preloaded on your device. If you ever purchase new maps, these would no be included in the free Lifetime maps updates.

I've never bought a refurbished item so I'm asking is refurbished as if it was made new again. Does it come with all that normally comes with this item when buying it new? Is there any draw backs in buying a refurbished item?

Refurbished products are "like new." Refurbished electronics are products which have most often been returned to the manufacturer because it was unwanted or had some minor defect. Several may argue that they are better than a brand new item because the item gets retested before it goes back on the market.
