About Geoffrey Beene
“Fashion is treated too much as news rather than what it is, what it does, and how it performs,” fashion designer Geoffrey Beene (1927–2004) told the Los Angeles Times in 1985. To that end, he operated generally on a minimalist streak, ensuring his creations were functional, comfortable, and stylish. Deciding against a medical career at a young age, he instead ended up in fashion school before going to Paris to learn tailoring. After several years as a designer for a New York firm, he struck out on his own in 1963, earning high-profile clients such as Lynda Bird Johnson, Faye Dunaway, and Glenn Close. His brand survives him today, offering a wide range of apparel and accessories for men and women and donating 100% of the brand’s net profits to cancer research and other important causes.
